This stove came from a house in Scarborough ME. In approximately 1905 with the arrival of electricity came, it was moved into a seasonal house in the same town.
In about 1960 the homeowner contracted with an architect to redo the kitchen in that house, and stove was sent to the garage. After some time when no one wanted, it was sent to the community rummage sale.
The architect’s son, Bill, happened to be on vacation the week of the sale. Owning a van and being young, he was drafted by the ladies running the sale to move it to the sale site.
As Bill packed up the stove, he casually asked the donor, “What if I bought this stove right now? I could take it straight to my house…”
And so it was.
Bill bought the stove and spent a few days taking it apart. He even went to the Portland Company for two broken pieces.
In about 1995 a former employee of Portland Stove took it to his shop and completely refastened, replaced all the bolts etc. The nickeling was replated in 1995 by a place in Colorado
Bill used the stove to heat his seasonal house for about 35 years until moving to Maine and renovating the kitchen.
“I remember doing turkeys in the oven. Piece of cake!”
