The firebox measures 21 inches wide across the front and tapers back to a width of 18 inches at the rear of the stove. The firebox area is 12 inches deep will hold approximately 4 to 5 stick of wood at a time. The stove was made by the Portland Foundry in Portland Maine around 1880. Bi-fold doors can be opened for a view of the fire and closed to improve the efficiency of the stove by allowing it to burn longer and put out more heat. The doors discretely fold back against the sides of the stove. With teh doors open a fire will burn for 2-3 hours, close the doors to increase the burn time to up 6 hours. The Portland Franklin fireplace stove vents through a flue located in the back of the stove. This stove will heat 2-3 rooms.
